International Arabic Language Day
Just before the Christmas time starts, Give Something Back to Berlin invites you on a small journey through the Arabic language and culture! This year certainly has been about staying sane through the world-opening words of literature and artistic elements as the rest of the world remained closed. Some of us have enjoyed the comfort of home-cooked food, and some others have pursued their urge of continuing to learn, taking on new hobbies and projects. In this spirit, we invite you to join us and dive into the world of the Arabic language.
Our Sara Mardini, who is a Syrian refugee, human rights activist, and SAR swimmer, will introduce you to the beauty of the Arabic language in a crash course.
Next, you will listen to and watch poetry in Arabic, English, and German from the award-winning Syrian-Palestinian poet Ghayath Almadhoun, whose works have been translated into more than 15 languages. Ghayath will show some of his poetry films in this exclusive screening and will comment further on writing in exile, life in Berlin, and ways of staying sane during lockdowns as a person who used to spend most of the year travelling.
Last but not least, GSBTB’s Open Kitchen will conduct an Arabic food cooking session and take you to the heart of Arab cuisine and everyday culture.
