Four artists from GSBTB’s Open Hearts Space open an exhibition in the heart of Neukölln. Their art reflect experiences of migration, womanhood, and settling in a new society.

The exhibition can be visited at Backhaus (Weserstr. 168, 12045 Berlin) daily between 11:00-17:00 until 30th September 2022.

    GSBTB Open Hearts Space:

The GSBTB  Open Hearts Space aims to create a safe space for those experiencing a new culture and life dynamics by encouraging intercultural dialogue and supporting trauma healing. The project uses artistic and bodily forms of expression as a tool of communication to overcome linguistic and cultural barriers. Open Hearts Space is an internal project of Give Something Back To Berlin.

    Artists statements from the exhibition:

    Yasmeen Almaliki

“If you hear a voice within you say, ‘YOU CAN’T PAINT,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced” said Vincent Van Gogh one of my inspirations

I used to say I can’t even draw a simple flower until I stopped myself from saying like that, and here I am now presenting my Art to the world.

    Toulin Balbaki

Toulin Balbaki, born in Damascus  in 1976, graduated from the Damascus Academy of Arts in 2001 where she studied modern art in oil painting and sculpture. Professionally and privately, she is engaged in painting and animation production, starting from writing the full script to the completion of the film production. Additionally, she is engaged in artistic production of innovative computer games, design of glass eyelids and panels for furnishings and furniture, jewelry and evening dresses. She also conducts training and lectures related to modern art. Just the variety between different artistic tasks is her greatest inspiration. For 23 years she has held collective exhibitions in Arab countries such as Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and also in the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Germany. Balbaki has so far held 15 exhibitions. She is currently studying 3D Gems Design in Berlin.

    Hiba Al Fardous Alazm

I grew up while I was missing the feeling of belonging, from my home country and even here in Germany, but I always find it when I hold my Painting Brush, when I can express all my feelings on the white Canvas. Here you can see some of my artworks which live in me and I live in them and I hope that would touch your heart and soul.

    Teeb Aljamal

As long as I remember, I was a visitor in Syria although my veins hold the blood and my papers hold the nationality of it. I was a visitor in Saudi Arabia even though it’s where I was born and grew up. I am now a visitor in Berlin, where I learned that my body is the only home I have and I have nothing further. The process of enlightenment goes on, and I have no idea when it will end. The process of understanding all of the differences of what I gained and what I don’t want in my present life any longer. I come to understand and be fine with the fact that I am just a visitor in life on earth.
